Gilbert was born in Houston, Texas, on August 17, 1943, to J.B. and Johnnie Gilbert. His family later moved to Mexia, Texas, where he became an accomplished high school football player and served as president of his senior class.
At just 17 years old, Gilbert enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, beginning a military career that would shape much of his early adulthood. His strong performance led him to radar school and eventually to an instructor position at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi.
During his years in the Air Force, Gilbert taught radar and worked with the technology during the Vietnam War era. He also pursued higher education while serving, attending the University of Southern Mississippi, where he earned a bachelor’s degree.
After leaving the military, Gilbert transitioned into the private sector and developed a successful career with companies including Honeywell, Rubbermaid and Qwest. His professional responsibilities took his family to several cities, and he was frequently called upon to help offices experiencing difficulties improve their operations and performance.
