The music world is mourning the death of William Orbit, the acclaimed British producer and musician whose innovative production helped shape some of the most influential pop and electronic music of the late 1990s and beyond. He was 69.
Orbit died at his home on July 23, 2026, according to a statement shared by his family and friends on social media on Friday, August 7. A cause of death was not disclosed.
“We are deeply saddened by his passing,” the statement said, adding that Orbit would be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the many people whose lives he touched through his music, friendship, and kindness.
Orbit’s most celebrated work came through his collaboration with Madonna on her landmark 1998 album, Ray of Light. He co-produced much of the record and played a central role in creating its atmospheric electronic sound, helping transform Madonna’s music at a pivotal point in her career.
The album featured such acclaimed songs as “Ray of Light,” “Frozen,” and “The Power of Good-Bye.” Ray of Light became a major critical and commercial success and earned Orbit multiple Grammy honors.

With All Saints, Orbit worked on songs including “Pure Shores” and “Black Coffee.” He later collaborated with Britney Spears and Will.i.am on Spears’ 2013 album Britney Jean, helping produce the track “Alien.”
Across his career, Orbit earned seven Grammy nominations and three Grammy wins, cementing his reputation as one of the most distinctive producers of his generation.
