The cause of death for Brandon Clarke, the former Memphis Grizzlies forward who died at age 29 in May, has been released by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
According to the medical examiner, Clarke died from the combined effects of heroin and cocaine, and his death was classified as an accident. Multiple prescription medications were also listed as a contributing factor.
Clarke was found unresponsive in a bedroom at a residence in the San Fernando Valley at about 5 p.m. on May 11, 2026. Emergency responders arrived at the home, where he was pronounced dead. Drug paraphernalia was reportedly found at the residence.
The medical examiner’s determination provides the first official explanation for Clarke’s sudden death. When news of his passing first emerged in May, neither the Memphis Grizzlies nor Clarke’s representatives publicly disclosed a cause of death.
Clarke was selected No. 21 overall in the 2019 NBA Draft and spent his entire seven-year NBA career with the Memphis Grizzlies. He quickly established himself as an important contributor and was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team following his debut season.
Over 309 regular-season games, Clarke averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. His athleticism, finishing ability, and defensive versatility made him a valuable part of several Memphis teams
His later career was heavily affected by injuries. An Achilles tear sidelined him for much of the 2023-24 season, while additional knee and calf injuries limited his availability in subsequent seasons. He appeared in only two games during the 2025-26 season.
Before reaching the NBA, Clarke played college basketball at San Jose State University before transferring to Gonzaga University, where he became one of the country’s most highly regarded players.
The Memphis Grizzlies expressed shock and sadness following Clarke’s death, remembering him as an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact extended beyond basketball.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also mourned Clarke, describing him as a beloved teammate and leader who played with passion and determination.
Clarke’s death came only weeks after he had been arrested in Arkansas on charges that included speeding and possession of a controlled substance. That legal matter was separate from the medical examiner’s determination of his cause and manner of death.
For the basketball community, Clarke’s death represents the loss of a player whose NBA career was still unfolding. Brandon Clarke leaves behind a legacy defined by his seven seasons with Memphis, his achievements as a young NBA player, and the relationships he built with teammates, coaches, fans, and members of the wider community.
